A friend of mine went to a funeral where most of the attendants were unbelievers. As the service went on she became more and more enraged at what the pastor was saying. He said that there are always two questions uppermost in people’s minds at a funeral: Will our deceased loved one be in heaven? and Will we go to heaven? His answer: everyone one goes to heaven. In his attempt to comfort the bereaved, he went on to say that it doesn’t matter how we live; we will all go to heaven.

Why is it that people have such difficulty with the truth when it comes to people’s never-dying souls, especially at funerals? This so-called pastor now has all these people’s blood on his hands. He had an opportunity to speak of the real love of Christ, who gave himself for us and saved us from our sins that we might live a live worthy of Him. Instead he waxed lyrical about heaven in terms on a wonderful golf course, not once mentioning the presence of Christ. No wonder my friend was livid! She would have tackled him on these issues, but ‘Pastor’ made a hasty departure! Guilty conscience?

Ironically, because Christ was absent from any of his description of heaven, this pastor was effectively describing hell. And in glowing terms. The deception is complete and Satan smiles at his victory. It’s easy to point a finger at this pastor (wolf in sheep’s clothing!), but how often have we been ashamed of the gospel and held back for fear of man? Let this man’s complicity with the devil be a warning to us, so that we be never found doing the same.
