Teddy’s most prized possession is the button from his father’s coat worn in battle, and Teddy delights to tell of his father’s military prowess. He is reputation as leader of the children in the village is threatened by Nancy, whose proud ways bring them into conflict. Teddy has to learn to fight his feelings of hatred and mischief.
His fascination with the military life is heightened by the arrival of soldiers in his village whom he enchants with his tale, and he uses his experiences of his own conflicts to help a soldier to improve his life.
When Teddy nearly past with his own life to save his button, he comes closer to understanding the demands made in a ‘battle’ of life.
