What you have in your hand is the end result of a family effort. The use of catechisms and confessions has been an invaluable help and tool to us in our family devotions. Over an extended period of time, as we have worked through the Westminster Shorter Catechism, we have taken the liberty of rephrasing the questions and answers, not only into modern English, but also at the same time endeavouring to add a Baptist understanding to the questions on baptism.
Brian Stone was born in Boksburg, South Africa, and was converted in his early teens in the local Baptist Church in Queenstown where he grew up. After completing his schooling, he went into a family business, but sensed a growing call into the pastoral ministry. Just after his marriage to Judy in 1967, he entered the Baptist Theological College in Johannesburg, where he studied for four years and has been serving the Lord in a number of Baptist Churches in South Africa over the past thirty-five years. He and Judy have four married children and ten grandchildren. Family devotions have played a very important role in their lives and this book has been the result of a family effort in the use of various catechisms and confessions that have contributed to enriching their lives in a meaningful way.
Before commencing his present pastoral responsibility, he and Judy ran a Place of Retreat for pastoral couples and Christian workers for six years. He has devoted his life to the pastoral ministry and sought to enrich the lives of families within the Church.
It is obvious that a man must always know, about any given subject, a great deal more than he is going to teach. Brian Stone has proved the benefits and blessings of teaching children Christian truths and values in family worship by means of the Catechism. This book will be a great aid for those whose aim it is to make family worship enjoyable and profitable. From our own personal experience my wife and I have found that teaching children by means of the Children’s Catechism has been invaluable, and I am glad to see this publication being made available at this time.

Catechising imaginatively, vivaciously and spiritually is a superlative means of grace available for all Christian families. I love the way Brian Stone has put this one together and commend it highly.
—Erroll Hulse, Editor, Reformation Today
I am very pleased that Brian Stone has written this catechism. It has long been needed. Every family should own one in order to improve family worship.
—John Temple, father of four and grandfather to fourteen
Baptists have a rich heritage of using catechisms to instruct children and new believers. I am delighted that recent years have witnessed a recovery of that heritage. This work by Brian Stone will be a wonderful blessing to parents and children alike who follow its user-friendly plan.
